PGY3 Goals and Objectives

Goals and Objectives:

PGY3 Neurosurgery – Clinical Year (adult rotation)

Surgical expectations:

  • lumbar discectomy, decompression +/- fusion, cage fusions, pedicle screw fixation
  • anterior cervical discectomy – corpectomy and fusion, posterior cervical laminectomy, posterior cervical fusions
  • elective craniotomy with opening of dura
  • remove simple brain tumors (e.g. surface meningiomas, gliomas, metastatic lesions)
  • trauma craniotomy with removal of hematomas (SDH, EDH) without assistance
  • management of open skull fractures
  • Operative log maintenance

Clinical expectations:

  • Inpatient care and call duties
  • Neurosurgery History & Physical preparation 
  • Ability to interpret lab tests, MRI, CT Scans, etc. 
  • Assist in patient management and discharge planning conferences 
  • Attend Journal Club 
  • Attend all chairman’s clinics while rotating at GW and at CHNMC
  • Participation at “All City Grand Rounds” 
  • Active participation at all teaching conferences
  • Participation in lab surgical approach course
  • Teaching medical students on service 
  • Report quality project
  • Simulated patient workshop

Goals and Objectives:

PGY3 Neurosurgery – Clinical Year (pediatric rotation)

Surgical expectations:

  • shunt placement without assistance
  • management of shunt complications without assistance
  • diagnosis and management of pediatric head trauma without assistance
  • evaluation and management of pediatric spine injuries
  • pediatric spine surgery including cervical/lumbar open procedures
  • Operative log maintenance

Clinical expectations:

  • Inpatient care and call duties at CHNMC
  • Neurosurgery History & Physical preparation 
  • Master concepts of pediatric neurosurgery and patient management
  • Attend pediatric clinics 
  • Participation in lab surgical approach course 
  • Attend Journal Club 
  • Participation at “All City Grand Rounds” 
  • Lecture and assist in the evaluation of Medical Students
  • Report quality project
  • Simulated patient workshop
